Act 3,

Scenes 1-6

 Brief Summary -

 Themes -

Bloodline – The theme of bloodline is prominent in Act Three as Macbeth targets Banquo and his son Fleance.  Reasons why Macbeth targets Fleance are not due to his actions but rather his biological relationship to his father Banquo.  However, Fleance does not declare his revenge against Macbeth when his father dies and when Banquo is alive, Fleance did not view Macbeth as a threat.

Prophecy- The theme of prophecy plays a large role throughout the play but Act Three is where audiences can see how prophecy has ruined Macbeth’s psyche.  Macbeth tragically believes that he can control fate by killing anyone who could pose as a predicted threat to his throne.  While reading the scenes, there will be questions where you can analyze how Macbeth’s sanity is tragically crumbling as a result of prophecies.

Supernatural – The role of the supernatural is represented in the Act as Banquo returns as a ghost to haunt Macbeth’s psyche.  Furthermore, as Macbeth is haunted by Banquo, Macbeth believes that the only way to live in peace is to visit the witches for more future prophecies.  The representation of the ghost of Banquo can serve as a foreshadowing element to Macbeth’s tragic demise.

Secrecy – The theme of secrecy plays a role throughout the play as Macbeth’s relationship is dealt through secrecy and lies.  For instance, in Act Three Scene 2, Macbeth and Lady Macbeth’s interactions have changed as a result of Macbeth hiding his actions and Lady Macbeth hiding her true concerns about Macbeth’s sanity.

 Important Quotes -

“We hear our bloody cousins are bestow’d/ In England and in Ireland; not confessing/ Their cruel parricide, filling their hearers/ With strange invention: but of that to-morrow;/ When thererwithal we shall have cause of state/ Craving us jointly. “For mine own good,/ All causes shall give way: I am in blood/ Step’t in so far that, should I wade no more,/ Returning were as tedious as go o’er:/ Strange things I have in head, that will to hand;/ Which must be acted ere they may be scann’d” (3, 4, 141-147)
